Narrative:
After contacting cvg departure control on takeoff. We received what we thought was a radar vector to an assigned heading of 290 degree right turn. While initiating the right turn and clearing right, we observed an large transport departing on runway 18R. We reassumed runway heading, reconfirming heading with departure control. We maintained visibility contact and safe sep from the large transport. Cvg departure control instructed an immediate left turn to a heading of 090 degrees. We then initiated a left turn to this heading. The miscom between ourselves and departure control did not develop into the large transport and our aircraft coming into close proximity to one another. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter indicated that a passenger had observed the large transport traffic taking off on 18R and the resulting traffic conflict and was concerned enough to write to the company. Airline management now reviewing the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MLG TURNED RIGHT AFTER TKOF AT CVG. CORRECTED BY DEP CTLR. LGT TRAFFIC TAKING OFF ON PARALLEL RWY SIGHTED BY MLG FLT CREW AND LEFT TURN AVOIDED FURTHER CONFLICT.
Narrative: AFTER CONTACTING CVG DEP CTL ON TKOF. WE RECEIVED WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS A RADAR VECTOR TO AN ASSIGNED HDG OF 290 DEG RIGHT TURN. WHILE INITIATING THE RIGHT TURN AND CLRING RIGHT, WE OBSERVED AN LGT DEPARTING ON RWY 18R. WE REASSUMED RWY HDG, RECONFIRMING HDG WITH DEP CTL. WE MAINTAINED VIS CONTACT AND SAFE SEP FROM THE LGT. CVG DEP CTL INSTRUCTED AN IMMEDIATE LEFT TURN TO A HDG OF 090 DEGS. WE THEN INITIATED A LEFT TURN TO THIS HDG. THE MISCOM BTWN OURSELVES AND DEP CTL DID NOT DEVELOP INTO THE LGT AND OUR ACFT COMING INTO CLOSE PROX TO ONE ANOTHER. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR INDICATED THAT A PAX HAD OBSERVED THE LGT TFC TAKING OFF ON 18R AND THE RESULTING TFC CONFLICT AND WAS CONCERNED ENOUGH TO WRITE TO THE COMPANY. AIRLINE MGMNT NOW REVIEWING THE INCIDENT.
