Narrative:
Mis approach gave 070 degree heading to intercept fxe localizer for an ILS approach to fxe. 070 degree heading revealed aircraft left of localizer course. Approach was called to verify and reply placed aircraft right of course. After checking both sets, I confirmed my position as left of localizer course. Finally mia approach gave new heading of 120 degrees to intercept the localizer for runway 08. This confirmed my instruments were correct. After intercepting the localizer and inbound at 2200', mia approach turned me over to fxe tower. After reporting inbound, I was cleared to continue ILS and land 13. I completely missed '13' as the landing runway at that point. After braking out at approximately 1500', I called in as VMC and the airfield in sight. Tower acknowledged and said, 'cleared to land, runway 13.' at that particular point I was quickly changing my #2 VOR (set for go around reference) to ILS to double-check its readings with visibility reference to the runway--again completely missing the 'runway 13' directive. After confirming my indicators and ILS's were both fine and with the localizer and G/south wired, I was committed to land. As I gracefully glided past the threshold, I saw a large #8, and it finally dawned on me I was touching down on the wrong runway. Runway 13 was finally making contact with my brain. It was my error brought upon by preoccupation with cockpit INS. I felt that had tower been monitoring my approach, I could have been reminded of the circle land on 13, but they were very busy and I really have no excuse.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON AN ILS TO RWY 8 AT FXE, SMT PLT ACCEPTED CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 13, THEN PROCEEDED TO LAND ON RWY 8.
Narrative: MIS APCH GAVE 070 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT FXE LOC FOR AN ILS APCH TO FXE. 070 DEG HDG REVEALED ACFT LEFT OF LOC COURSE. APCH WAS CALLED TO VERIFY AND REPLY PLACED ACFT RIGHT OF COURSE. AFTER CHKING BOTH SETS, I CONFIRMED MY POS AS LEFT OF LOC COURSE. FINALLY MIA APCH GAVE NEW HDG OF 120 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE LOC FOR RWY 08. THIS CONFIRMED MY INSTRUMENTS WERE CORRECT. AFTER INTERCEPTING THE LOC AND INBND AT 2200', MIA APCH TURNED ME OVER TO FXE TWR. AFTER RPTING INBND, I WAS CLRED TO CONTINUE ILS AND LAND 13. I COMPLETELY MISSED '13' AS THE LNDG RWY AT THAT POINT. AFTER BRAKING OUT AT APPROX 1500', I CALLED IN AS VMC AND THE AIRFIELD IN SIGHT. TWR ACKNOWLEDGED AND SAID, 'CLRED TO LAND, RWY 13.' AT THAT PARTICULAR POINT I WAS QUICKLY CHANGING MY #2 VOR (SET FOR GAR REF) TO ILS TO DOUBLE-CHK ITS READINGS WITH VIS REF TO THE RWY--AGAIN COMPLETELY MISSING THE 'RWY 13' DIRECTIVE. AFTER CONFIRMING MY INDICATORS AND ILS'S WERE BOTH FINE AND WITH THE LOC AND G/S WIRED, I WAS COMMITTED TO LAND. AS I GRACEFULLY GLIDED PAST THE THRESHOLD, I SAW A LARGE #8, AND IT FINALLY DAWNED ON ME I WAS TOUCHING DOWN ON THE WRONG RWY. RWY 13 WAS FINALLY MAKING CONTACT WITH MY BRAIN. IT WAS MY ERROR BROUGHT UPON BY PREOCCUPATION WITH COCKPIT INS. I FELT THAT HAD TWR BEEN MONITORING MY APCH, I COULD HAVE BEEN REMINDED OF THE CIRCLE LAND ON 13, BUT THEY WERE VERY BUSY AND I REALLY HAVE NO EXCUSE.
