Narrative:
We were approximately 3 mi outside of ign VOR when ny approach control advised us, 'traffic 12 O'clock, 2500'.' shortly after that we began to get a visibility on what eventually turned out to be a flight of 6 helicopter's inbound to swf also. We were at 3000' as were they. We went down to 2500' and to the right to avoid the formation. We advised ATC of our actions. We passed the traffic and returned to our course at which point the first officer pointed out more traffic on the TCAS, at which time we received a TA. When I looked at the TCAS it indicated traffic at 12 O'clock,M 100' low. At the same time received an RA 'climb' command. We did just that until clear of traffic, which we never were able to see.
