Narrative:
Departed dtw IFR en route to oshawa, canada (cyoo). Once clear of the TCA, cancelled IFR and proceeded to cyoo VFR. Did not file VFR flight plan. Departing oshawa, contacted ground control, was advised VFR flight plan is required in canada for air transport aircraft, but I could file in the air. Took off. Air filed flight plan then contacted toronto terminal. Was advised to execute 180 degree turn as I had penetrated toronto TRSA west/O a clearance. I complied. Once clear of the TRSA I reestablished contact and received clearance through the TRSA. Proceeded on course. I believe the airspace violation was a result of lack of positional awareness due to pilot fatigue. Failure to file the VFR flight plan was due to insufficient familiarity with canadian regulations. Since this incident, I have made a thorough study of canadian go around's.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMT FREIGHTER FILED VFR PLAN IN AIR FOR CANADIAN REGS. INADVERTENTLY ENTERED TORONTO ATA.
Narrative: DEPARTED DTW IFR ENRTE TO OSHAWA, CANADA (CYOO). ONCE CLR OF THE TCA, CANCELLED IFR AND PROCEEDED TO CYOO VFR. DID NOT FILE VFR FLT PLAN. DEPARTING OSHAWA, CONTACTED GND CTL, WAS ADVISED VFR FLT PLAN IS REQUIRED IN CANADA FOR AIR TRANSPORT ACFT, BUT I COULD FILE IN THE AIR. TOOK OFF. AIR FILED FLT PLAN THEN CONTACTED TORONTO TERMINAL. WAS ADVISED TO EXECUTE 180 DEG TURN AS I HAD PENETRATED TORONTO TRSA W/O A CLRNC. I COMPLIED. ONCE CLR OF THE TRSA I REESTABLISHED CONTACT AND RECEIVED CLRNC THROUGH THE TRSA. PROCEEDED ON COURSE. I BELIEVE THE AIRSPACE VIOLATION WAS A RESULT OF LACK OF POSITIONAL AWARENESS DUE TO PLT FATIGUE. FAILURE TO FILE THE VFR FLT PLAN WAS DUE TO INSUFFICIENT FAMILIARITY WITH CANADIAN REGS. SINCE THIS INCIDENT, I HAVE MADE A THOROUGH STUDY OF CANADIAN GAR'S.
