Narrative:

We were climbing out of lga, passing 10000 for 12000 with TCAS in the above mode on the 5 mi range when we got a traffic advisory. The traffic was at 11 O'clock. The first officer saw traffic at this point, the captain never had visual contact. We then got a resolution advisory to climb. The captain followed the RA and climbed at 1500 FPM to 12000 ft. We did not violate our clearance to 12000. The first officer did not have visual contact with the other aircraft and was searching for him. The TCAS showed a target within the 2 mi range and a few hundred ft below us. The first officer said the traffic that he initially saw appeared to be a transport category aircraft. During this process new york departure was handing us off to new york center and giving us a climb to 15000. The first officer asked departure if we had any traffic at our 9 O'clock position and he said yes but there was no conflict.
