Narrative:
We were flying northbound on amben 300 and were approximately 120 NM south of champ when we encountered severe turbulence while deviating around a thunderstorm. At the time we were at FL350, .78 mach, with seat belt/no smoking sign on, they had been on for 45 mins before the incident occurred, engine anti-ice and continuous ignition on. Autoplt was engaged in command I and altitude hold. The radar was on and on both the 30 and 60 mi scale no WX was observed to the right. We encountered turbulence which displaced us from our altitude approximately 1000 ft above and below our altitude. The event lasted approximately 30-40 seconds after which we returned to our assigned altitude of FL350. We sustained injuries to 4 flight attendants and 8 passenger. All injuries occurred in last 6 rows of coach and aft galley. Passenger injuries were possibly due to unfastened seat belts and 1 passenger was coming out of lavatory. Flight attendants were in aft galley with carts out of their storage bins.
