Narrative:
While loading route into FMS I misread mead 8 departure to be meads intersection (our field route was las mead 8, etc). When our pre departure clearance (pre departure clearance) arrived in cockpit, I caught the error. The flight plan printout was not very good and the mead 8 was hard to distinguish from the meads intersection. The meads intersection is on the 067 degree right 32 mi east of las. I feel that having 2 similar words describing 2 units that could both be used for a departure out of the same airport could some day cause a problem.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR X FLT CREW MISPROGRAMED COMPUTER WITH MEADS SID (THERE IS NOT A MEADS SID) INSTEAD OF MEAD 8 DEP.
Narrative: WHILE LOADING RTE INTO FMS I MISREAD MEAD 8 DEP TO BE MEADS INTXN (OUR FIELD RTE WAS LAS MEAD 8, ETC). WHEN OUR PDC (PRE DEP CLRNC) ARRIVED IN COCKPIT, I CAUGHT THE ERROR. THE FLT PLAN PRINTOUT WAS NOT VERY GOOD AND THE MEAD 8 WAS HARD TO DISTINGUISH FROM THE MEADS INTXN. THE MEADS INTXN IS ON THE 067 DEG R 32 MI E OF LAS. I FEEL THAT HAVING 2 SIMILAR WORDS DESCRIBING 2 UNITS THAT COULD BOTH BE USED FOR A DEP OUT OF THE SAME ARPT COULD SOME DAY CAUSE A PROB.
