Narrative:
Climbing out of dfw on a heading to intercept the departure, cleared to 10000'. At 9600' controller called 1 O'clock traffic descending to 11000'. At the same time the TCAS called 'traffic,' then immediately went to RA with 'monitor vertical speed.' I looked in the direction of the traffic and when I resumed my x-chk I noticed that the autoplt was not about to level off (all autoplt indications were normal). I clicked off the autoplt and reduced power, but zoomed to 10150' before I stopped the climb. The medium large transport is fairly notorious for failing to capture altitudes, especially with high vertical speeds. I took my attention from the flight instruments to look for the called traffic and TCAS event when perhaps I should have concentrated totally on the level off.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF ACR MLG DISTRACTED BY TCASII RA OVERSHOT CLRNC ALT.
Narrative: CLBING OUT OF DFW ON A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE DEP, CLRED TO 10000'. AT 9600' CTLR CALLED 1 O'CLOCK TFC DSNDING TO 11000'. AT THE SAME TIME THE TCAS CALLED 'TFC,' THEN IMMEDIATELY WENT TO RA WITH 'MONITOR VERT SPD.' I LOOKED IN THE DIRECTION OF THE TFC AND WHEN I RESUMED MY X-CHK I NOTICED THAT THE AUTOPLT WAS NOT ABOUT TO LEVEL OFF (ALL AUTOPLT INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL). I CLICKED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND REDUCED PWR, BUT ZOOMED TO 10150' BEFORE I STOPPED THE CLB. THE MLG IS FAIRLY NOTORIOUS FOR FAILING TO CAPTURE ALTS, ESPECIALLY WITH HIGH VERT SPDS. I TOOK MY ATTN FROM THE FLT INSTRUMENTS TO LOOK FOR THE CALLED TFC AND TCAS EVENT WHEN PERHAPS I SHOULD HAVE CONCENTRATED TOTALLY ON THE LEVEL OFF.
