Narrative:
I was given a progressive taxi to runway 5R due to abnormal routing due to construction. Upon reaching an intersection, I stopped and asked the ground controller to clarify taxi instructions. Upon proceeding straight ahead and looking for my 'next right turn', I was on an inactive runway. My next right turned out to be the active runway (5R). Upon realizing this, I immediately taxied clear. Almost simultaneously, the ground controller realized what had happened and told me to take my next right. A small business jet had just initiated his takeoff roll, and had to abort takeoff. Looking back, there was a right turn just before the runway that came back at about a 140 degree angle. Since I was on a runway (during taxi) rather than a taxiway, the markings for the intersecting runway weren't clear. I had missed the taxiway and turned onto the runway. I believe that I should have stopped again since there was some doubt about my position, however I also believe that the controller should have made her directions clearer, and paid more attention to me since I had just asked for clarification. I also believe that during periods of construction temporary markings should be used for runways and taxiways not normally used for taxiing. A controller should realize that even though they know the airport layout like the back of their hand, most transient pilots don't.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMA PLT UNFAMILIAR WITH ARPT TAXIES ONTO ACTIVE RWY. ACFT ABORTS TKOF.
Narrative: I WAS GIVEN A PROGRESSIVE TAXI TO RWY 5R DUE TO ABNORMAL ROUTING DUE TO CONSTRUCTION. UPON REACHING AN INTXN, I STOPPED AND ASKED THE GND CTLR TO CLARIFY TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. UPON PROCEEDING STRAIGHT AHEAD AND LOOKING FOR MY 'NEXT R TURN', I WAS ON AN INACTIVE RWY. MY NEXT R TURNED OUT TO BE THE ACTIVE RWY (5R). UPON REALIZING THIS, I IMMEDIATELY TAXIED CLR. ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, THE GND CTLR REALIZED WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND TOLD ME TO TAKE MY NEXT R. A SMALL BUSINESS JET HAD JUST INITIATED HIS TKOF ROLL, AND HAD TO ABORT TKOF. LOOKING BACK, THERE WAS A R TURN JUST BEFORE THE RWY THAT CAME BACK AT ABOUT A 140 DEG ANGLE. SINCE I WAS ON A RWY (DURING TAXI) RATHER THAN A TAXIWAY, THE MARKINGS FOR THE INTERSECTING RWY WEREN'T CLR. I HAD MISSED THE TAXIWAY AND TURNED ONTO THE RWY. I BELIEVE THAT I SHOULD HAVE STOPPED AGAIN SINCE THERE WAS SOME DOUBT ABOUT MY POS, HOWEVER I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE CTLR SHOULD HAVE MADE HER DIRECTIONS CLEARER, AND PAID MORE ATTN TO ME SINCE I HAD JUST ASKED FOR CLARIFICATION. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT DURING PERIODS OF CONSTRUCTION TEMPORARY MARKINGS SHOULD BE USED FOR RWYS AND TAXIWAYS NOT NORMALLY USED FOR TAXIING. A CTLR SHOULD REALIZE THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THE ARPT LAYOUT LIKE THE BACK OF THEIR HAND, MOST TRANSIENT PLTS DON'T.
