Narrative:
Our maintenance procedures require a line check every 3 days. We departed on day 3 for an overnight. Inspection had been done at K O'clock on day 1. Thinking we had till midnight, it was no problem. In reality the program counts the day the inspection is done as day 1 regardless of the time so if done at 2359 the inspection is good for only 2 days and 1 min not 3-24 hour periods. Maintenance control (prior to our departure on day 4), called and wanted to know the date of the last line check. We were on the ramp and advised them (through the station - lbb) that it was K O'clock on day 1. Still unaware of the problem we taxied out but prior to takeoff we called the station to see if they had relayed the information to maintenance. They said yes and that we were to call maintenance when we got to ama. In ama we discovered that we were not legal. We (at this point) don't know why we were told to call from ama unless possibly they thought we were in the air and not just off the gate. Our operation makes this firmly maintenance's responsibility, just as surely the captain's responsibility to check, and since it is in the operations manual that I'm required to carry and know, the buck stopped here but I misunderstood the time calculations.

Title: ACFT FLOWN WITHOUT PERFORMANCE OF REQUIRED ACFT LINE CHK.
Narrative: OUR MAINT PROCS REQUIRE A LINE CHK EVERY 3 DAYS. WE DEPARTED ON DAY 3 FOR AN OVERNIGHT. INSPECTION HAD BEEN DONE AT K O'CLOCK ON DAY 1. THINKING WE HAD TILL MIDNIGHT, IT WAS NO PROBLEM. IN REALITY THE PROGRAM COUNTS THE DAY THE INSPECTION IS DONE AS DAY 1 REGARDLESS OF THE TIME SO IF DONE AT 2359 THE INSPECTION IS GOOD FOR ONLY 2 DAYS AND 1 MIN NOT 3-24 HR PERIODS. MAINT CTL (PRIOR TO OUR DEP ON DAY 4), CALLED AND WANTED TO KNOW THE DATE OF THE LAST LINE CHK. WE WERE ON THE RAMP AND ADVISED THEM (THROUGH THE STATION - LBB) THAT IT WAS K O'CLOCK ON DAY 1. STILL UNAWARE OF THE PROBLEM WE TAXIED OUT BUT PRIOR TO TKOF WE CALLED THE STATION TO SEE IF THEY HAD RELAYED THE INFO TO MAINT. THEY SAID YES AND THAT WE WERE TO CALL MAINT WHEN WE GOT TO AMA. IN AMA WE DISCOVERED THAT WE WERE NOT LEGAL. WE (AT THIS POINT) DON'T KNOW WHY WE WERE TOLD TO CALL FROM AMA UNLESS POSSIBLY THEY THOUGHT WE WERE IN THE AIR AND NOT JUST OFF THE GATE. OUR OP MAKES THIS FIRMLY MAINT'S RESPONSIBILITY, JUST AS SURELY THE CAPT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHK, AND SINCE IT IS IN THE OPS MANUAL THAT I'M REQUIRED TO CARRY AND KNOW, THE BUCK STOPPED HERE BUT I MISUNDERSTOOD THE TIME CALCULATIONS.
