Narrative:
During cruise at flight plan altitude of FL290, center requested that we climb to FL330. Being a request without any additional information, we responded without identify and 'out of 290 for 330' and then waited for any reply from center. None was forthcoming, so we, because of our heavy weight, began a slow climb out of our cruise altitude. Approximately a min later, center asked if we were maintaining FL290. We responded, no, that we were cleared to FL330 and that we were at FL295. Center then asked that we return to FL290 and make about a 30 degree turn to the right for traffic. Center then asked for our altitude and we replied that we were at FL292 for FL290. At that time we had a brief TCASII oral 'traffic, traffic'. An indication of traffic momentarily displayed on our TCASII monitor then disappeared. Center then gave us a turn back left on course. The traffic was never visually sighted. The rest of the flight proceeded normally. I questioned the other crew members if they had heard center give us the initial climb clearance. They stated they had. The only explanations would seem to be that all 3 of us misunderstood center's initial instructions, or that center had thought our climb rate would have been faster to avoid any conflict with descending traffic. The controller resolved the situation quickly and professionally.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR CLRED TO HIGHER THEN REQUESTED TO RETURN TO ORIGINALLY ASSIGNED ALT AND TURN TO ORIGINALLY ASSIGNED ALT AND TURN TO NEW HDG.
Narrative: DURING CRUISE AT FLT PLAN ALT OF FL290, CENTER REQUESTED THAT WE CLB TO FL330. BEING A REQUEST WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL INFO, WE RESPONDED WITHOUT IDENT AND 'OUT OF 290 FOR 330' AND THEN WAITED FOR ANY REPLY FROM CENTER. NONE WAS FORTHCOMING, SO WE, BECAUSE OF OUR HVY WT, BEGAN A SLOW CLB OUT OF OUR CRUISE ALT. APPROX A MIN LATER, CENTER ASKED IF WE WERE MAINTAINING FL290. WE RESPONDED, NO, THAT WE WERE CLRED TO FL330 AND THAT WE WERE AT FL295. CENTER THEN ASKED THAT WE RETURN TO FL290 AND MAKE ABOUT A 30 DEG TURN TO THE R FOR TFC. CENTER THEN ASKED FOR OUR ALT AND WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE AT FL292 FOR FL290. AT THAT TIME WE HAD A BRIEF TCASII ORAL 'TFC, TFC'. AN INDICATION OF TFC MOMENTARILY DISPLAYED ON OUR TCASII MONITOR THEN DISAPPEARED. CENTER THEN GAVE US A TURN BACK L ON COURSE. THE TFC WAS NEVER VISUALLY SIGHTED. THE REST OF THE FLT PROCEEDED NORMALLY. I QUESTIONED THE OTHER CREW MEMBERS IF THEY HAD HEARD CENTER GIVE US THE INITIAL CLB CLRNC. THEY STATED THEY HAD. THE ONLY EXPLANATIONS WOULD SEEM TO BE THAT ALL 3 OF US MISUNDERSTOOD CENTER'S INITIAL INSTRUCTIONS, OR THAT CENTER HAD THOUGHT OUR CLB RATE WOULD HAVE BEEN FASTER TO AVOID ANY CONFLICT WITH DSNDING TFC. THE CTLR RESOLVED THE SITUATION QUICKLY AND PROFESSIONALLY.
