Narrative:
ATIS was current using runway 29 for takeoff. My hangar being close to runway 5 and the winds light I requested runway 5 on initial contact with the ground controller. I was cleared to runway 5 with instructions to inform the tower controller I was at runway 5 on initial contact. After my runup I contacted the tower controller I was ready for takeoff at runway 5 looking for a right downwind departure. The tower controller after handling other traffic for runway 29 stated, 'small aircraft a cleared for takeoff runway 5.' I proceeded onto the runway and accelerated shortly thereafter the tower controller cleared an small aircraft B for takeoff on runway 29, realizing the conflict I pulled back the power and settled back onto the runway. The tower controller realized his error also and cancelled the takeoff clearance for the small aircraft B. The tower controller instructed me to turn off at the taxiway prior to intersection of runway 5 and 29 and contact ground controller. I cleared runway 5 changed to ground controller who stated I should listen to the controller more closely and follow instructions. Being puzzled I stated I understood I was cleared for takeoff. I was cleared to runway 29 for a second takeoff without incident nor another word regarding the previous incident. I feel the controller was in error by clearing both aircraft for takeoff, he did realize his error quickly and acted properly as did the pilots.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CTLR CLRS 2 ACFT FOR TKOF ON INTERSECTING RWYS.
Narrative: ATIS WAS CURRENT USING RWY 29 FOR TKOF. MY HANGAR BEING CLOSE TO RWY 5 AND THE WINDS LIGHT I REQUESTED RWY 5 ON INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE GND CTLR. I WAS CLRED TO RWY 5 WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO INFORM THE TWR CTLR I WAS AT RWY 5 ON INITIAL CONTACT. AFTER MY RUNUP I CONTACTED THE TWR CTLR I WAS READY FOR TKOF AT RWY 5 LOOKING FOR A R DOWNWIND DEP. THE TWR CTLR AFTER HANDLING OTHER TFC FOR RWY 29 STATED, 'SMA A CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 5.' I PROCEEDED ONTO THE RWY AND ACCELERATED SHORTLY THEREAFTER THE TWR CTLR CLRED AN SMA B FOR TKOF ON RWY 29, REALIZING THE CONFLICT I PULLED BACK THE PWR AND SETTLED BACK ONTO THE RWY. THE TWR CTLR REALIZED HIS ERROR ALSO AND CANCELLED THE TKOF CLRNC FOR THE SMA B. THE TWR CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO TURN OFF AT THE TAXIWAY PRIOR TO INTXN OF RWY 5 AND 29 AND CONTACT GND CTLR. I CLRED RWY 5 CHANGED TO GND CTLR WHO STATED I SHOULD LISTEN TO THE CTLR MORE CLOSELY AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. BEING PUZZLED I STATED I UNDERSTOOD I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. I WAS CLRED TO RWY 29 FOR A SECOND TKOF WITHOUT INCIDENT NOR ANOTHER WORD REGARDING THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT. I FEEL THE CTLR WAS IN ERROR BY CLRING BOTH ACFT FOR TKOF, HE DID REALIZE HIS ERROR QUICKLY AND ACTED PROPERLY AS DID THE PLTS.
