Narrative:
We were cleared for a visual approach to 31L by approach control. WX was clear and 15 mi. We were at 5000 ft on downwind east of the airport. First officer was flying the approach. Approach control requested a tight pattern because of an small transport to follow. We started our turn to base a the same time that approach requested a turn. During the base turn I observed an small transport at our 12 O'clock position and same altitude. We were at approximately 3200 ft MSL. I took the aircraft and pushed for a descent. We went under and slightly behind the small transport. The controller asked the small transport if he saw us and he replied negative. At the same time the controller called a collision alert. After clearing the traffic we rejoined the final for 31L and made an uneventful landing. The small transport traffic had not been called out to us. This incident may have been prevented if we had queried the controller about the location of our traffic when they requested a tight pattern. We also could have notified approach that it would be difficult to fly a tight pattern when we were high and close to the field.

Title: CLOSE PROX ACR MLG ON A VISUAL APCH TO AUS AND A GA SMT STRAIGHT IN.
Narrative: WE WERE CLRED FOR A VISUAL APCH TO 31L BY APCH CTL. WX WAS CLR AND 15 MI. WE WERE AT 5000 FT ON DOWNWIND E OF THE ARPT. FO WAS FLYING THE APCH. APCH CTL REQUESTED A TIGHT PATTERN BECAUSE OF AN SMT TO FOLLOW. WE STARTED OUR TURN TO BASE A THE SAME TIME THAT APCH REQUESTED A TURN. DURING THE BASE TURN I OBSERVED AN SMT AT OUR 12 O'CLOCK POS AND SAME ALT. WE WERE AT APPROX 3200 FT MSL. I TOOK THE ACFT AND PUSHED FOR A DSCNT. WE WENT UNDER AND SLIGHTLY BEHIND THE SMT. THE CTLR ASKED THE SMT IF HE SAW US AND HE REPLIED NEGATIVE. AT THE SAME TIME THE CTLR CALLED A COLLISION ALERT. AFTER CLRING THE TFC WE REJOINED THE FINAL FOR 31L AND MADE AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG. THE SMT TFC HAD NOT BEEN CALLED OUT TO US. THIS INCIDENT MAY HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF WE HAD QUERIED THE CTLR ABOUT THE LOCATION OF OUR TFC WHEN THEY REQUESTED A TIGHT PATTERN. WE ALSO COULD HAVE NOTIFIED APCH THAT IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT TO FLY A TIGHT PATTERN WHEN WE WERE HIGH AND CLOSE TO THE FIELD.
