Narrative:
During pushback started #2 engine. Engine was going to overtemp so closed start lever before maximum egt was reached and motored engine. APU was weak. Called for external headset and ground air. When starting with ground air #2 engine start valve open light came on, but no drop in duct pressure or any rotation of N1 or N2. Ground crew reported smoke from #2 engine. Turned off start switch. Ground crew reported smoke increasing. Pulled #2 engine fire switch and discharged a fire bottle. Called for las emergency equipment to aircraft. Ground crew reported smoke decreasing and shortly after reported smoke increasing again. Discharged other fire bottle. Smoke decreased and finally stopped. After being towed back to gate, I inspected the engine and released emergency ground equipment. No engine fire warning occurred. Having voice communication with ground was invaluable in this incident.

Title: #2 ENG WAS RPTED BY GND PERSONNEL AS SMOKING. FIRE BOTTLE DISCHARGED. EMER GND EQUIP REQUESTED. SECOND BOTTLE DISCHARGE APPEARED TO CAUSE SMOKE TO CEASE. TOWED BACK TO GATE.
Narrative: DURING PUSHBACK STARTED #2 ENG. ENG WAS GOING TO OVERTEMP SO CLOSED START LEVER BEFORE MAX EGT WAS REACHED AND MOTORED ENG. APU WAS WEAK. CALLED FOR EXTERNAL HEADSET AND GND AIR. WHEN STARTING WITH GND AIR #2 ENG START VALVE OPEN LIGHT CAME ON, BUT NO DROP IN DUCT PRESSURE OR ANY ROTATION OF N1 OR N2. GND CREW RPTED SMOKE FROM #2 ENG. TURNED OFF START SWITCH. GND CREW RPTED SMOKE INCREASING. PULLED #2 ENG FIRE SWITCH AND DISCHARGED A FIRE BOTTLE. CALLED FOR LAS EMER EQUIP TO ACFT. GND CREW RPTED SMOKE DECREASING AND SHORTLY AFTER RPTED SMOKE INCREASING AGAIN. DISCHARGED OTHER FIRE BOTTLE. SMOKE DECREASED AND FINALLY STOPPED. AFTER BEING TOWED BACK TO GATE, I INSPECTED THE ENG AND RELEASED EMER GND EQUIP. NO ENG FIRE WARNING OCCURRED. HAVING VOICE COM WITH GND WAS INVALUABLE IN THIS INCIDENT.
