Narrative:
There were delays of 15-20 mins to depart cdw IFR so we left VFR. About 5 mi west at 2900 MSL, altitude chosen to avoid TCA. We encountered an updraft like no other one seen before. With power at idle and gear down we still climbed thus popping into the TCA. Then all of a sudden it stopped but there was no downdraft. As we continued at 2900 MSL we looked back to see the birth of a cell. I guess we caught the initial cumulus stage and the associated updraft.
