Narrative:
The problem arose when descending into den. I was navigating on the che 085 radial to intercept the den 312 to track inbound. I was at FL190 when I understood the controller to clear me to 16000 MSL. As I came out of the cloud I saw long's peak (elevation approximately 14400 ft). I asked for the altimeter setting and made the comment that the hill looked awfully close. I am sure that I was told to maintain 16000 ft. Min vectoring altitude for the area is 17000 MSL. Upon contact with denver approach I was told to call denver center on the ground. Situational awareness (knowing where you are) would have helped, as would being especially careful to listen to and read back all clrncs and pay attention to what they area.
