Narrative:
Somewhere near klamouth falls (lmt) we received an ACARS message from dispatch stating that we had departed lax illegally, since our radar was inoperative and we were filed through a known area of thunderstorms. 1) the radar was fine. The color on 1 inch of the last side was turning purple indicating a tube getting weak. 2) the previous captain stated that it worked fine. 3) we were not flying through an area of thunderstorms. Our route went through the corner of an area that could have buildups.
