Narrative:
Taxiing out of houston hobby (hou) ground controller switched us to tower frequency for taxi. Instructions were to taxi to runway 12R via taxiway delta, hold short of runway 12L. As we approached 12L on delta we were given further instructions to cross runway 12L and 17. As we approached runway 12R on delta taxiway the tower controller asked if we had crossed the hold short line. We said there was no hold short out here but that we were holding short of 12R and were half on runway 17. The controller told us he had landing traffic for runway 12R and instructed us to taxi up runway 35 to taxiway east and hold short of 12L. Later taxi and takeoff were normal. Later the controller stated that we were supposed to taxi via the red line to 12R, however, no mention was ever made to use the red line during taxi instructions. Although the radio traffic was not heavy the situation was made worse by 1 controller working both ground and tower at a moderately busy airport. Controller assumed he had given us instruction which he had not.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 12R AT HOU COMPLIED WITH CLRNC BUT WAS LATER TOLD THEY SHOULD HAVE USED THE RED LINE.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT OF HOUSTON HOBBY (HOU) GND CTLR SWITCHED US TO TWR FREQ FOR TAXI. INSTRUCTIONS WERE TO TAXI TO RWY 12R VIA TAXIWAY DELTA, HOLD SHORT OF RWY 12L. AS WE APCHED 12L ON DELTA WE WERE GIVEN FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS TO CROSS RWY 12L AND 17. AS WE APCHED RWY 12R ON DELTA TAXIWAY THE TWR CTLR ASKED IF WE HAD CROSSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE. WE SAID THERE WAS NO HOLD SHORT OUT HERE BUT THAT WE WERE HOLDING SHORT OF 12R AND WERE HALF ON RWY 17. THE CTLR TOLD US HE HAD LNDG TFC FOR RWY 12R AND INSTRUCTED US TO TAXI UP RWY 35 TO TAXIWAY E AND HOLD SHORT OF 12L. LATER TAXI AND TKOF WERE NORMAL. LATER THE CTLR STATED THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO TAXI VIA THE RED LINE TO 12R, HOWEVER, NO MENTION WAS EVER MADE TO USE THE RED LINE DURING TAXI INSTRUCTIONS. ALTHOUGH THE RADIO TFC WAS NOT HVY THE SITUATION WAS MADE WORSE BY 1 CTLR WORKING BOTH GND AND TWR AT A MODERATELY BUSY ARPT. CTLR ASSUMED HE HAD GIVEN US INSTRUCTION WHICH HE HAD NOT.
