Narrative:
Incident occurred during night time VFR first officer recurrent chkride. After some maneuvering over lake michigan, we proceeded to waukegan for traffic pattern work. We received no advisory from unicom but 1 aircraft was short final on runway 23 and an small aircraft was on approach for 23. I had planned an aborted landing on first approach and announced such on unicom so as not to surprise the small aircraft on final. At the last min he elected to go around so we landed to avoid conflict. Waukegan has right traffic on runway 23. The small aircraft had departed with a left turnout and from midfield downwind made a right turn out of traffic pattern. During the confusion of the first landing I became distraction with watching the small aircraft for collision avoidance. We made left traffic pattern also, and the small aircraft passed 400 ft overhead as he departed east. We continued with approximately 6 traffic patterns all to left (wrong direction) before departure to the southeast.

Title: NMAC DURING A NIGHT OP TRAINING ACTIVITY.
Narrative: INCIDENT OCCURRED DURING NIGHT TIME VFR FO RECURRENT CHKRIDE. AFTER SOME MANEUVERING OVER LAKE MICHIGAN, WE PROCEEDED TO WAUKEGAN FOR TFC PATTERN WORK. WE RECEIVED NO ADVISORY FROM UNICOM BUT 1 ACFT WAS SHORT FINAL ON RWY 23 AND AN SMA WAS ON APCH FOR 23. I HAD PLANNED AN ABORTED LNDG ON FIRST APCH AND ANNOUNCED SUCH ON UNICOM SO AS NOT TO SURPRISE THE SMA ON FINAL. AT THE LAST MIN HE ELECTED TO GAR SO WE LANDED TO AVOID CONFLICT. WAUKEGAN HAS R TFC ON RWY 23. THE SMA HAD DEPARTED WITH A L TURNOUT AND FROM MIDFIELD DOWNWIND MADE A R TURN OUT OF TFC PATTERN. DURING THE CONFUSION OF THE FIRST LNDG I BECAME DISTR WITH WATCHING THE SMA FOR COLLISION AVOIDANCE. WE MADE L TFC PATTERN ALSO, AND THE SMA PASSED 400 FT OVERHEAD AS HE DEPARTED E. WE CONTINUED WITH APPROX 6 TFC PATTERNS ALL TO L (WRONG DIRECTION) BEFORE DEP TO THE SE.
