Narrative:
The original clearance was salisbury VOR J-79 katzn intersection, j- 193 cofield VOR, weavr intersection, J-121 charleston VOR, etc. En route we were cleared to the katzn VOR (new and not on the chart) J-79 to charleston VOR, etc. That was my problem. The first officer was making a PA, I was flying and received this clearance to 'go direct to the katzn VOR frequency 109.6 and the VOR was causing problems with other aircraft'. At the katzn VOR I turned to the left to intercept the wrong airway. The first officer corrected me and I turned back to the right to intercept J-79 to charleston. ATC also corrected me and told me of traffic conflict (possible). Notes: the first officer had had this new VOR before and was familiar with the route, I was approximately 20 mi off course. As we approached the katzn VOR I was focusing on the other aircraft on TCASII, so was the other pilot. When I made the wrong turn at the katzn VOR the first officer did not pick it up right away. My priority was not on track but with TCASII and watching it work (no TA or RA). The only other thing I may add is this katzn VOR should not be used without it being depicted on the chart and I should have been aggressive in my inquiry with ATC or the other PNF.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR LGT TRACK HDG DEV.
Narrative: THE ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS SALISBURY VOR J-79 KATZN INTXN, J- 193 COFIELD VOR, WEAVR INTXN, J-121 CHARLESTON VOR, ETC. ENRTE WE WERE CLRED TO THE KATZN VOR (NEW AND NOT ON THE CHART) J-79 TO CHARLESTON VOR, ETC. THAT WAS MY PROBLEM. THE FO WAS MAKING A PA, I WAS FLYING AND RECEIVED THIS CLRNC TO 'GO DIRECT TO THE KATZN VOR FREQ 109.6 AND THE VOR WAS CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH OTHER ACFT'. AT THE KATZN VOR I TURNED TO THE L TO INTERCEPT THE WRONG AIRWAY. THE FO CORRECTED ME AND I TURNED BACK TO THE R TO INTERCEPT J-79 TO CHARLESTON. ATC ALSO CORRECTED ME AND TOLD ME OF TFC CONFLICT (POSSIBLE). NOTES: THE FO HAD HAD THIS NEW VOR BEFORE AND WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE RTE, I WAS APPROX 20 MI OFF COURSE. AS WE APCHED THE KATZN VOR I WAS FOCUSING ON THE OTHER ACFT ON TCASII, SO WAS THE OTHER PLT. WHEN I MADE THE WRONG TURN AT THE KATZN VOR THE FO DID NOT PICK IT UP RIGHT AWAY.
