Narrative:
We were level at FL280 on a vector of 090 degree to climb to a higher altitude. About 1 min earlier we saw an medium large transport passing from our 9 O'clock position to our 2 O'clock position beneath us going on a heading of approximately 110. He appeared to be at FL270. About 1 min later we got a 'traffic, traffic' warning on our TCASII. We both looked at our TCASII to see where the traffic was when we got the 'climb, climb, climb' advisory from the TCASII. The red square was superimposed on our position. We pulled up immediately and at about 300-400 ft above our altitude, we got the 'monitor vertical speed' on the TCASII. Moments later the 'clear of conflict' sounded. I called lax ATC to advise them of what we've done and he replied that the aircraft below us 'slid through his altitude a little bit, 300 ft'. ATC cleared us to FL290 and the flight continued uneventfully.
