Narrative:

I had a forced landing in a rough field due to fuel starvation. No injuries or damage. Fuel was added to checked out plane and flown out by experienced pilot. The instructor and I planned to fly to granville, ny (45 mi away) to have service performed on the plane and do final training work for my flight test for the next week. The instructor showed up 1 hour late after having taken a friend of his up in my plane, then they went out for coffee. The instructor said he didn't have enough time to go with me. I was shocked. He said I should go by myself, since I had been there 2 or 3 times. I told him of my discomfort and said go ahead. He said I had plenty of fuel and that he checked with WX and it was good. I took off about 12 O'clock and could not find granville. I tried to go south through the valley rather than over the hills. I had 60 degree rather than 90 degree dialed into the VOR and went too far east. The mountain range on the other side hid the town and I could not climb due to cloud ceiling. At the 60 degree radial off of glens falls I decided to go to glens falls for fuel. 10 mi out I called and it was closed. I turned toward schenectady, cut back RPM's and leaned. The engine sputtered and stopped 1.8 hours after I took off. I landed in the field I had just passed over. I failed to plan flight adequately and accurately. Poor supervision. Stress to get plane svced. Angry at instructor. Instructor lied to me and ridiculed me. Instructor should be assigned to remedial instruction training. I will get a competent instructor.

Title: SPI HAS FORCED LNDG DUE FUEL STARVATION.

Narrative: I HAD A FORCED LNDG IN A ROUGH FIELD DUE TO FUEL STARVATION. NO INJURIES OR DAMAGE. FUEL WAS ADDED TO CHKED OUT PLANE AND FLOWN OUT BY EXPERIENCED PLT. THE INSTRUCTOR AND I PLANNED TO FLY TO GRANVILLE, NY (45 MI AWAY) TO HAVE SVC PERFORMED ON THE PLANE AND DO FINAL TRAINING WORK FOR MY FLT TEST FOR THE NEXT WK. THE INSTRUCTOR SHOWED UP 1 HR LATE AFTER HAVING TAKEN A FRIEND OF HIS UP IN MY PLANE, THEN THEY WENT OUT FOR COFFEE. THE INSTRUCTOR SAID HE DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GO WITH ME. I WAS SHOCKED. HE SAID I SHOULD GO BY MYSELF, SINCE I HAD BEEN THERE 2 OR 3 TIMES. I TOLD HIM OF MY DISCOMFORT AND SAID GO AHEAD. HE SAID I HAD PLENTY OF FUEL AND THAT HE CHKED WITH WX AND IT WAS GOOD. I TOOK OFF ABOUT 12 O'CLOCK AND COULD NOT FIND GRANVILLE. I TRIED TO GO S THROUGH THE VALLEY RATHER THAN OVER THE HILLS. I HAD 60 DEG RATHER THAN 90 DEG DIALED INTO THE VOR AND WENT TOO FAR E. THE MOUNTAIN RANGE ON THE OTHER SIDE HID THE TOWN AND I COULD NOT CLB DUE TO CLOUD CEILING. AT THE 60 DEG RADIAL OFF OF GLENS FALLS I DECIDED TO GO TO GLENS FALLS FOR FUEL. 10 MI OUT I CALLED AND IT WAS CLOSED. I TURNED TOWARD SCHENECTADY, CUT BACK RPM'S AND LEANED. THE ENG SPUTTERED AND STOPPED 1.8 HRS AFTER I TOOK OFF. I LANDED IN THE FIELD I HAD JUST PASSED OVER. I FAILED TO PLAN FLT ADEQUATELY AND ACCURATELY.
