Narrative:

After takeoff the landing gear was retracted. The left main gear door light remained on (unsafe). The landing gear was recycled but the left main landing gear failed to extend. The visual viewing parts revealed the gear was entangled with the door. All appropriate checklists were completed. After a lengthy conference with our maintenance control and the manufacturer a decision was made to land at detroit metropolitan airport with the left main landing gear retracted. Possibly, aircraft manufacturers might investigate an emergency wing tip wheel similar to the gear that was installed on mlt bomber aircraft. These could be actuated in an emergency and possibly prevent further damage to the aircraft wing.
