Narrative:
The approach track is visual but has radial definition from santa monica. The base leg turn to dog leg is defined off of santa monica. I elected to remain on smo until crossing the 084 radial. At that point TCASII indicated a conflict. Approach sent us to tower which was busy, keeping my new first officer busy. TCASII conflict was an aircraft on straight in approach to 25L. I assumed him to be for 24L and spent too much time watching him. We xed the 24R final and I mistook 25R for 24R as visibility into the sun and smog was low. Tower called us and pointed out our error. I had overshot. Cause: 1) not having 24R ILS tuned. 2) TCASII warning took too long to resolve. 3) frequency congestion. 4) new first officer. 5) visibility lower than normal but VFR. 6) track and altitude restrictions on approach take you in cockpit. Corrections: 1) loosen up approach to a true visual. 2) quicker change to tower frequency. 3) better coordination in cockpit on navigation aids.

CORRECTIONS: 1) LOOSEN UP APCH TO A TRUE VISUAL. 2) QUICKER CHANGE TO TWR FREQ. 3) BETTER COORD IN COCKPIT ON NAV AIDS.
