Narrative:

En route erw on waard 3 arrival approaching rbv at 11000 ft 250 KTS; ATC reported VFR traffic at 12 O'clock southwest bound (plus/minus 5 mi) at 10500. TCASII then gave 'TA' ('traffic') followed by an 'RA' ('climb, climb'). Per our directives, I disengaged autoplt and began climb; my first officer reported to ATC our action; I leveled at 11700 ft as TCASII began announcing 'check rate of climb' followed by 'clear of conflict.' we then began descent back to 1100. All TCASII warnings were very loud and made radio communication difficult to hear. No traffic was seen visually. ATC said traffic passed 1 mi to our right at 10500 ft.
