Narrative:

My company uses a procedure whereby the taxi and takeoff weights are not presented to the cockpit crew until after taxiing from the gate. Passenger/fuel/cargo load is relayed to the aircraft via ACARS. After gate departure from syd the crew was advised that the final weight exceeded the maximum structural taxi weight by 1700 pounds. This procedure takes the cockpit crew 'out of the safety loop'. Unfortunately, this procedure is 'FAA approved'. Taxi back to gate was required. Recommendation: FAA require airlines to not allow taxi until the aircraft weight is finalized to assure that the crew will not taxi at an unsafe structural weight.

Narrative: MY COMPANY USES A PROC WHEREBY THE TAXI AND TKOF WTS ARE NOT PRESENTED TO THE COCKPIT CREW UNTIL AFTER TAXIING FROM THE GATE. PAX/FUEL/CARGO LOAD IS RELAYED TO THE ACFT VIA ACARS. AFTER GATE DEP FROM SYD THE CREW WAS ADVISED THAT THE FINAL WT EXCEEDED THE MAX STRUCTURAL TAXI WT BY 1700 POUNDS. THIS PROC TAKES THE COCKPIT CREW 'OUT OF THE SAFETY LOOP'. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS PROC IS 'FAA APPROVED'. TAXI BACK TO GATE WAS REQUIRED. RECOMMENDATION: FAA REQUIRE AIRLINES TO NOT ALLOW TAXI UNTIL THE ACFT WT IS FINALIZED TO ASSURE THAT THE CREW WILL NOT TAXI AT AN UNSAFE STRUCTURAL WT.
