Narrative:
While on a pleasure sightseeing flight in my home built aircraft, I decided to practice an approach to landing in a mowed farmers field. I make 2 low passes over the field, each followed by a full power 'go around' maneuver. During these 2 'gars' with a left hand pattern, and at an altitude of 150 ft climbing to 300 ft AGL, I believe my turn was approximately 200- 300 ft outside a residence which lay near the left corner of the departure end of the field. I then made a third lower approach and executed another 'go around'. During this maneuver, I may have turned left sooner, bringing me closer to the residence and at an altitude of 100-150 ft AGL. Although not intentional, this was a careless and unthinking maneuver. Later in speaking with the occupants, I discovered they were frightened and mad. (They said I had flown over their house 5 times even though I am sure it was 3 times). I expressed my sincere apologies, and assured them it was not my intention to frighten them and that I would not do it again. I believe they had not previously had any experience with small planes, which contributed to their frightened attitude. In retrospect, I chose a field too close to a residence to practice this type of maneuver. Another time, I would take into account the proximity of buildings and choose a location which would permit my flight path to stay away from buildings. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information. Reporter apparently soothed the observer's feelings as no action has been taken as of this date by farmer.

Title: SMA HOME BUILT FLOWN IN PROX OF OBSTRUCTION, A FARMER'S HOME, IN VIOLATION OF FAR.
Narrative: WHILE ON A PLEASURE SIGHTSEEING FLT IN MY HOME BUILT ACFT, I DECIDED TO PRACTICE AN APCH TO LNDG IN A MOWED FARMERS FIELD. I MAKE 2 LOW PASSES OVER THE FIELD, EACH FOLLOWED BY A FULL PWR 'GAR' MANEUVER. DURING THESE 2 'GARS' WITH A L HAND PATTERN, AND AT AN ALT OF 150 FT CLBING TO 300 FT AGL, I BELIEVE MY TURN WAS APPROX 200- 300 FT OUTSIDE A RESIDENCE WHICH LAY NEAR THE L CORNER OF THE DEP END OF THE FIELD. I THEN MADE A THIRD LOWER APCH AND EXECUTED ANOTHER 'GAR'. DURING THIS MANEUVER, I MAY HAVE TURNED L SOONER, BRINGING ME CLOSER TO THE RESIDENCE AND AT AN ALT OF 100-150 FT AGL. ANOTHER TIME, I WOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE PROX OF BUILDINGS AND CHOOSE A LOCATION WHICH WOULD PERMIT MY FLT PATH TO STAY AWAY FROM BUILDINGS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO. RPTR APPARENTLY SOOTHED THE OBSERVER'S FEELINGS AS NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN AS OF THIS DATE BY FARMER.
