Narrative:
Inbound to O'hare at 11000 ft our TCASII indicated a TA. We looked at the display and began to scan for the target. Center, at about this same time, called a pop up VFR target at 12 O'clock, 2 mi, mode C indicates 10500 ft. Still with no visual acquisition of the target, our TCASII indicated an RA and a command to climb. I initiated an immediate climb while at the same time the copilot told center we were climbing to resolve the conflict. We climbed to approximately 11700 ft when we visually acquired the target off our right wing and also got an all clear from the TCASII. We immediately notified center that we had our target visually and we are descending back to 11000 ft. I don't think we would have had a midair had we not climbed but it would have been very close. TCASII did an excellent job. The system worked. Both our 2 aircraft had the right to be where we were and TCASII prevented a possible midair.
