Narrative:
Operating buf-ewr captain flying landed runway 22L at ewr. Exited runway 22L overrun on taxiway aa with instruction to hold short of 22R for departure traffic. Upon clearing runway 22L on taxiway aa, the captain called for the after landing checklist, which I acknowledged, and then repeated that we were to 'hold short of runway 22R'. I completed the after landing checklist as we slowed. Again, I repeated 'hold short 22R'. It was apparent that we would hold short, however, he was looking for the hold short line. We stopped over the line by 10 ft or so. ATC then asked if we were over the line. The captain answered yes. ATC cancelled takeoff clearance for departing aircraft. (I don't think that aircraft was rolling yet.) ATC then instructed us to cross 22R and contact ground control. We did this and taxied to the gate. Contributing factor: poor line marking, no red runway signs. Perceptions: approaching an overrun looks much different than moving toward actual runway. Overruns are not marked the same as the runway. Human performance: very good captain, excellent procedures use of checklists, etc. I'd fly with this man anytime, anywhere.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY. CAPT TAXIED TOO FAR AND EXTENDED OVER THE HOLD LINE. TWR CANCELED A TKOF AND CLRED FLT ACROSS THE RWY.
Narrative: OPERATING BUF-EWR CAPT FLYING LANDED RWY 22L AT EWR. EXITED RWY 22L OVERRUN ON TAXIWAY AA WITH INSTRUCTION TO HOLD SHORT OF 22R FOR DEP TFC. UPON CLRING RWY 22L ON TAXIWAY AA, THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST, WHICH I ACKNOWLEDGED, AND THEN REPEATED THAT WE WERE TO 'HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22R'. I COMPLETED THE AFTER LNDG CHKLIST AS WE SLOWED. THE CAPT ANSWERED YES. ATC CANCELLED TKOF CLRNC FOR DEPARTING ACFT. (I DON'T THINK THAT ACFT WAS ROLLING YET.) ATC THEN INSTRUCTED US TO CROSS 22R AND CONTACT GND CTL. WE DID THIS AND TAXIED TO THE GATE. CONTRIBUTING FACTOR: POOR LINE MARKING, NO RED RWY SIGNS. PERCEPTIONS: APCHING AN OVERRUN LOOKS MUCH DIFFERENT THAN MOVING TOWARD ACTUAL RWY. OVERRUNS ARE NOT MARKED THE SAME AS THE RWY. HUMAN PERFORMANCE: VERY GOOD CAPT, EXCELLENT PROCS USE OF CHKLISTS, ETC. I'D FLY WITH THIS MAN ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.
