Narrative:
A 'TCASII' TA indicated traffic approximately 2 1/2 mi in front of us and 3500 ft below, climbing. Within a few seconds the TCASII 'RA' was displayed with a 'climb' indicated on the vertical speed and announced over the audio warning. I responded immediately, climbing to 28500 ft with a vertical speed of approximately 2300 FPM. The captain told lax center that we were responding to a 'TCASII advisory.' center told us to 'maintain FL280' and that the traffic was a flight of 2 aircraft. By this time 'TCASII' indicated 'clear of traffic.' it was displaying the traffic as 1 mi behind us and 500 ft above. We returned to FL280. We never saw the traffic.

Narrative: A 'TCASII' TA INDICATED TFC APPROX 2 1/2 MI IN FRONT OF US AND 3500 FT BELOW, CLBING. WITHIN A FEW SECONDS THE TCASII 'RA' WAS DISPLAYED WITH A 'CLB' INDICATED ON THE VERT SPD AND ANNOUNCED OVER THE AUDIO WARNING. I RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY, CLBING TO 28500 FT WITH A VERT SPD OF APPROX 2300 FPM. THE CAPT TOLD LAX CENTER THAT WE WERE RESPONDING TO A 'TCASII ADVISORY.' CENTER TOLD US TO 'MAINTAIN FL280' AND THAT THE TFC WAS A FLT OF 2 ACFT. BY THIS TIME 'TCASII' INDICATED 'CLR OF TFC.' IT WAS DISPLAYING THE TFC AS 1 MI BEHIND US AND 500 FT ABOVE. WE RETURNED TO FL280. WE NEVER SAW THE TFC.
