Narrative:
On the profile, just past symon intersection, ZLA advised traffic alert 2 O'clock, 1 mi. An aircraft passed right to left under us, perpendicular to our flight path. We overrode the autoplt and cws pitch mode and decreased our rate of descent from 2000 FPM to about 500 FPM. We informed ATC it was a close one. We should have seen the plane sooner but ATC had kept us high and fast (as usual!) before clearing us onto the 24/25 profile. We both were too engrossed in making the restrictions at symon and sadde intxns. Since reagan fired the patco controllers I realize we need to make up for the lack of controllers by having thousands and thousands of profiles, stars, and sids, but do we have to have the published procedure modified by ATC every 30 seconds? It is very obvious that many of these new controllers (unlike the old patco folks) have never seen sids, stars, profiles and approach procedures from inside a jet cockpit, let alone flown a jet. Why aren't they required to jumpseat a min of 4 legs annually into lax sfo/ord, etc? I visit their facilities once each yr. I really wish they would visit mine.

Narrative: ON THE PROFILE, JUST PAST SYMON INTXN, ZLA ADVISED TFC ALERT 2 O'CLOCK, 1 MI. AN ACFT PASSED R TO L UNDER US, PERPENDICULAR TO OUR FLT PATH. WE OVERRODE THE AUTOPLT AND CWS PITCH MODE AND DECREASED OUR RATE OF DSCNT FROM 2000 FPM TO ABOUT 500 FPM. WE INFORMED ATC IT WAS A CLOSE ONE. WE SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE PLANE SOONER BUT ATC HAD KEPT US HIGH AND FAST (AS USUAL!) BEFORE CLRING US ONTO THE 24/25 PROFILE.
