Narrative:

Recently our airline purchased an large transport aircraft from another airline. When transmitting on VHF-2 #2, interphone or PA the overhead speakers are muted out. On departure from jfk to dfw, while on new york center, the so was discussing this problem with the flight's dispatcher and company maintenance on VHF #2. ZNY issued a clearance to climb and turn while he was talking so it was partially muted out. The PNF the aircraft read back the clearance and a climbing turn was initiated to FL270 heading of 270. After several hundred ft ATC corrected the readback and a correction to altitude was immediately made. The captain had previously written the problem up twice before and it was signed off as normal for this aircraft type. After the incident the maintenance coordination was called again and informed of the situation that just had occurred. The captain suggested that until they could rewire the airplane to correct the problem, they should make a notation on subsequent flight plans. This would alert the crews of the muting and that they should wear their headsets when ever VHF #2 is used. The maintenance coordinator said he would inform the upper level maintenance people who would take care of that.

Narrative: RECENTLY OUR AIRLINE PURCHASED AN LGT ACFT FROM ANOTHER AIRLINE. WHEN XMITTING ON VHF-2 #2, INTERPHONE OR PA THE OVERHEAD SPEAKERS ARE MUTED OUT. ON DEP FROM JFK TO DFW, WHILE ON NEW YORK CENTER, THE SO WAS DISCUSSING THIS PROBLEM WITH THE FLT'S DISPATCHER AND COMPANY MAINT ON VHF #2. ZNY ISSUED A CLRNC TO CLB AND TURN WHILE HE WAS TALKING SO IT WAS PARTIALLY MUTED OUT. THE PNF THE ACFT READ BACK THE CLRNC AND A CLBING TURN WAS INITIATED TO FL270 HDG OF 270. AFTER SEVERAL HUNDRED FT ATC CORRECTED THE READBACK AND A CORRECTION TO ALT WAS IMMEDIATELY MADE. THE CAPT HAD PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN THE PROBLEM UP TWICE BEFORE AND IT WAS SIGNED OFF AS NORMAL FOR THIS ACFT TYPE. AFTER THE INCIDENT THE MAINT COORD WAS CALLED AGAIN AND INFORMED OF THE SITUATION THAT JUST HAD OCCURRED. THE CAPT SUGGESTED THAT UNTIL THEY COULD REWIRE THE AIRPLANE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM, THEY SHOULD MAKE A NOTATION ON SUBSEQUENT FLT PLANS. THIS WOULD ALERT THE CREWS OF THE MUTING AND THAT THEY SHOULD WEAR THEIR HEADSETS WHEN EVER VHF #2 IS USED. THE MAINT COORDINATOR SAID HE WOULD INFORM THE UPPER LEVEL MAINT PEOPLE WHO WOULD TAKE CARE OF THAT.
