Narrative:
We were cleared to cross nottingham at 9000 on ott STAR, then descend to 5000 ft. There was traffic in front of us, opposite direction, climbing to 8000 ft. Our TCASII called traffic. As we descended through 8700 ft MSL, the controller asked us to return to 9000 ft. We said we had aircraft Y. He said continue descent to 5000 ft.
