Narrative:
New york approach control (127.6) cleared us for VOR/DME-a maintain 3000 and cross clifo (FAF 4.8 DME) at 2000. At around 11 DME approach control said we were coming up on clifo, descend to 2000 ft. Our reply, we don't concur but we will leave 3000 for 2000. Approach control, go to geb tower. After landing our DME read 5.8 DME from station (VOR on field). Called new york approach control supervisor. Aircraft was not in confliction with other aircraft have DME check, 'have a nice day.'our DME just came out of maintenance 1 week and 2 trips before ($2177.00). Check DME, (everything ok has been good since).
