Narrative:
During preflight planning, checked for instrument approach into destin, fl, (81J). Found 1 VOR approach to (nos) airport off eglin VOR. Received WX briefing from gainesville FSS. The briefer stated all vors along route were operational. Flying over tyndall AFB tuned in eglin VOR. VOR did not appear operational. Upon contacting eglin approach they stated eglin VOR was destroyed 3 yrs earlier during a tornado. Why is the approach still published every 60 days? Why did the FSS briefer not notify of the shutdown? Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter states he called the NOTAM 'people' who stated it is a published NOTAM so no longer issued by FSS. He had reviewed the approach procedure prior to departing and with FSS indicating all vors on route were operational thought all was well. There is a note on low altitude chart that VOR is shutdown which he saw after the fact. Reporter says it seems like a disclaimer. Approach controller laughed when he said he could not get a signal. Hopes something will be done.

Narrative: DURING PREFLT PLANNING, CHKED FOR INST APCH INTO DESTIN, FL, (81J). FOUND 1 VOR APCH TO (NOS) ARPT OFF EGLIN VOR. RECEIVED WX BRIEFING FROM GAINESVILLE FSS. THE BRIEFER STATED ALL VORS ALONG RTE WERE OPERATIONAL. FLYING OVER TYNDALL AFB TUNED IN EGLIN VOR. VOR DID NOT APPEAR OPERATIONAL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR STATES HE CALLED THE NOTAM 'PEOPLE' WHO STATED IT IS A PUBLISHED NOTAM SO NO LONGER ISSUED BY FSS. HE HAD REVIEWED THE APCH PROC PRIOR TO DEPARTING AND WITH FSS INDICATING ALL VORS ON RTE WERE OPERATIONAL THOUGHT ALL WAS WELL. THERE IS A NOTE ON LOW ALT CHART THAT VOR IS SHUTDOWN WHICH HE SAW AFTER THE FACT. RPTR SAYS IT SEEMS LIKE A DISCLAIMER. APCH CTLR LAUGHED WHEN HE SAID HE COULD NOT GET A SIGNAL. HOPES SOMETHING WILL BE DONE.
