Narrative:
Flight from slc to sfo. With slc center, just prior to contact ZOA, we were cleared to fly 240 degrees until receiving pye VOR, then cleared for golden gate 1 arrival. ZOA was contacted. We reported our heading to pye. We were told that holding for sfo was in effect so we slowed. Approaching pye we were given holding instructions, 'hold pye as published, maintain altitude (?) efc of (?).' on golden gate 1, the holding pattern is south of pye on the victor arwy. At pye we turned south to hold. Center asked where we were going and said holding pattern was north of pye. We could not locate pattern on golden state 1 or on area chart. Center described pattern and we returned to pye and hold north. In discussion with center we found that golden gate 2 STAR was in effect, dated the previous day. Both the first officer and I had this chart in our flight kits, but had retrieved the wrong one. On ground, we called oak supervisor and he implied that the problem had occurred all day long. In fact, another air carrier flight behind us requested description of pattern. We suggest: 1) controllers give radial when stating 'as published.' 2) a better system of issuing publications that are not effective for several days. I had added these changes earlier in aug, but this one was not effective until later in aug, so I kept the old procedure separate, which caused the error.

Title: CLEARED FOR A HOLD AS PUBLISHED ON THE GOLDEN GATE 2 STAR FOR SFO, ACR MLG FLT CREW ATTEMPTS HOLD AS PUBLISHED ON THE OUT OF DATE GOLDEN GATE 1 STAR--IT DOESN'T WORK.
Narrative: FLT FROM SLC TO SFO. WITH SLC CENTER, JUST PRIOR TO CONTACT ZOA, WE WERE CLRED TO FLY 240 DEGS UNTIL RECEIVING PYE VOR, THEN CLRED FOR GOLDEN GATE 1 ARR. ZOA WAS CONTACTED. WE RPTED OUR HDG TO PYE. WE WERE TOLD THAT HOLDING FOR SFO WAS IN EFFECT SO WE SLOWED. APCHING PYE WE WERE GIVEN HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS, 'HOLD PYE AS PUBLISHED, MAINTAIN ALT (?) EFC OF (?).' ON GOLDEN GATE 1, THE HOLDING PATTERN IS S OF PYE ON THE VICTOR ARWY. AT PYE WE TURNED S TO HOLD. CENTER ASKED WHERE WE WERE GOING AND SAID HOLDING PATTERN WAS N OF PYE. WE COULD NOT LOCATE PATTERN ON GOLDEN STATE 1 OR ON AREA CHART. CENTER DESCRIBED PATTERN AND WE RETURNED TO PYE AND HOLD N. IN DISCUSSION WITH CENTER WE FOUND THAT GOLDEN GATE 2 STAR WAS IN EFFECT, DATED THE PREVIOUS DAY. BOTH THE F/O AND I HAD THIS CHART IN OUR FLT KITS, BUT HAD RETRIEVED THE WRONG ONE. ON GND, WE CALLED OAK SUPVR AND HE IMPLIED THAT THE PROB HAD OCCURRED ALL DAY LONG. IN FACT, ANOTHER ACR FLT BEHIND US REQUESTED DESCRIPTION OF PATTERN. WE SUGGEST: 1) CTLRS GIVE RADIAL WHEN STATING 'AS PUBLISHED.' 2) A BETTER SYS OF ISSUING PUBLICATIONS THAT ARE NOT EFFECTIVE FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I HAD ADDED THESE CHANGES EARLIER IN AUG, BUT THIS ONE WAS NOT EFFECTIVE UNTIL LATER IN AUG, SO I KEPT THE OLD PROC SEPARATE, WHICH CAUSED THE ERROR.
