Narrative:
First flight of the day. Assigned an aircraft new to our fleet which had numerous changes from the majority of our other medium large transport's. During preflight, could not hear over the oxygen mask interphone. Called maintenance. There was a sticker on both first officer's and captain's mask switch which stated 'deactivated.' we tested the mask microphone and it worked ok to talk on the radios. Informed by maintenance that the interphone had been deactivated per an engineering order. It didn't quite sound right, but the mask microphone did work and the first officer said he could use hand signals to communicate with me. The mechanic signed off the logbook stating it had been deactivated. This airplane has quite a few 'deactivated' stickers for several things that had been deactivated, so it did not seem too unusual. Later, I found out that the mechanic maintenance control, engineering had a communication problem and it should not have been deactivated. In the future, if it's not in the MEL, or cdl, just because there's an engineering order, doesn't mean it's right.
