Narrative:
I was the captain on flight dca-ord. During preflight an FAA inspector came to the cockpit and stated he would be riding in the jumpseat and giving us a chkride en route to ord. I asked to see his credentials. I asked if he was a rated pilot on this aircraft. He said no. I asked if were a pilot. He sad no. He then revealed his maintenance status. I then pointed out our aircraft logbooks and asked him if he required any assistance with the oxygen or communication systems at his station. He took some notes en route. During descent we had an engine bleed valve malfunction and went through our QRH procedure. We did not solve the problem. The FAA inspector asked to see our licenses and medical certificates. The copilot showed his but I explained that mine were in my jacket hanging at the rear of the flight deck but I would get them after flight arrival. At the gate at ord, he again asked to see my license and medical. I stated I would complete the parking checklist, complete the logbook entries, and then display them. He then exited the cockpit. I assumed he would wait for me in the forward galley or on the jetbridge. When I left the cockpit, the flight attendants said the FAA inspector asked to get his belongings, which were stored in the passenger cabin, held up passenger deplaning, and then exited. He stopped at the gate agent desk to ask where his connecting gate to california was and what my name was. Shouldn't the FAA inspector just introduce himself as a maintenance inspector and not pretend he is an air carrier flight inspector? Shouldn't he have waited to see what I put in the maintenance logbook and also see my license and medical?

Title: CAPT RPTING PROTESTS FAA INSPECTOR ON FLT NOT COMPLETING PAPER WORK.

SHOULDN'T THE FAA INSPECTOR JUST INTRODUCE HIMSELF AS A MAINT INSPECTOR AND NOT PRETEND HE IS AN AIR CARRIER FLT INSPECTOR? SHOULDN'T HE HAVE WAITED TO SEE WHAT I PUT IN THE MAINT LOGBOOK AND ALSO SEE MY LICENSE AND MEDICAL?
