Narrative:
I was cleared to land runway 31 at fxe simultaneously with an mdt cleared to land runway 26. I had the mdt in sight. I did not know that the mdt was clear to land and when I saw him in the traffic pattern he appeared to be climbing (I assume this is because I was descending). When it appeared that we were converging, I called tower and asked for permission to do a 360 right for traffic avoidance. Tower told me to continue on final. At this time it was obvious that we were at the same altitude. The pilot of the mdt saw me and executed a quick right turn to avoid me. Until we were very close it looked as though I would pass beneath the mdt. When the mdt turned base he descended to my altitude. My first instinct was to do a right 360 but waited too long and allowed the controller to influence me when I should have taken positive action much earlier. In the future I will listen to my instincts rather than the tower person who has a 2 dimensional view of the world.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA HAD NMAC WITH MDT IN TFC PATTERN AT FXE. SMA CLRED TO LAND 31. MDT CLRED TO LAND 26.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED TO LAND RWY 31 AT FXE SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH AN MDT CLRED TO LAND RWY 26. I HAD THE MDT IN SIGHT. I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE MDT WAS CLR TO LAND AND WHEN I SAW HIM IN THE TFC PATTERN HE APPEARED TO BE CLBING (I ASSUME THIS IS BECAUSE I WAS DSNDING). WHEN IT APPEARED THAT WE WERE CONVERGING, I CALLED TWR AND ASKED FOR PERMISSION TO DO A 360 R FOR TFC AVOIDANCE. TWR TOLD ME TO CONTINUE ON FINAL. AT THIS TIME IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT WE WERE AT THE SAME ALT. THE PLT OF THE MDT SAW ME AND EXECUTED A QUICK R TURN TO AVOID ME. UNTIL WE WERE VERY CLOSE IT LOOKED AS THOUGH I WOULD PASS BENEATH THE MDT. WHEN THE MDT TURNED BASE HE DSNDED TO MY ALT. MY FIRST INSTINCT WAS TO DO A R 360 BUT WAITED TOO LONG AND ALLOWED THE CTLR TO INFLUENCE ME WHEN I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN POSITIVE ACTION MUCH EARLIER. IN THE FUTURE I WILL LISTEN TO MY INSTINCTS RATHER THAN THE TWR PERSON WHO HAS A 2 DIMENSIONAL VIEW OF THE WORLD.
