Narrative:
En route to 4800n008w in french control, in the process of obtaining oceanic clearance, was having trouble contacting shanwick on both VHF and HF. Captain was able to raise them on VHF, at the time he was copying the clearance we received a SELCAL on HF that was shanwick. The first officer answered the SELCAL and advised shanwick we were getting the clearance on VHF. Shanwick on HF wanted a readback on the clearance. The first officer read the clearance back on HF while captain was talking to shanwick on VHF. Shanwick on HF then cleared us to FL310 from FL350. We started down, at which time we realized we were in french control and shanwick could not clear us down. We called france and advised them, they then cleared us to FL310. We were at 34700 at this time. French control called us back later and advised us that we were not at FL350 when he cleared us to FL310. He advised us we were at 34600 (approximately). This all took place approaching shanwicks airspace.
