Narrative:
Problem: airspeed at flair was approximately 5 KTS high, causing aircraft to balloon and touch down approximately halfway down runway. Brakes were not applied soon enough nor hard enough to stop rollout on remaining runway. Brakes were locked, leaving skid marks for the last 50 yards of runway. Plane skidded straight off end of runway, down a gentle slope of grass about 20 yards, and came to a stop in a thicket. No injuries, minimal damage to aircraft. Contributing factors: airspace around joliet was crowded, approach was aborted twice due to intervening traffic. 10-12 KT crosswind approximately perpendicular to active runway (R-12). Final approach made with 20 degree flaps at 70-75 KTS. Human performance: pilot became intent on landing the aircraft. When aircraft ballooned, should have decided to go around. Even at touchdown there was still sufficient runway to take off again and made new approach.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PLT OF SMA ON LNDG ROLL OUT ROLLED OFF END OF RWY.
Narrative: PROBLEM: AIRSPD AT FLAIR WAS APPROX 5 KTS HIGH, CAUSING ACFT TO BALLOON AND TOUCH DOWN APPROX HALFWAY DOWN RWY. BRAKES WERE NOT APPLIED SOON ENOUGH NOR HARD ENOUGH TO STOP ROLLOUT ON REMAINING RWY. BRAKES WERE LOCKED, LEAVING SKID MARKS FOR THE LAST 50 YARDS OF RWY. PLANE SKIDDED STRAIGHT OFF END OF RWY, DOWN A GENTLE SLOPE OF GRASS ABOUT 20 YARDS, AND CAME TO A STOP IN A THICKET. NO INJURIES, MINIMAL DAMAGE TO ACFT. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: AIRSPACE AROUND JOLIET WAS CROWDED, APCH WAS ABORTED TWICE DUE TO INTERVENING TFC. 10-12 KT XWIND APPROX PERPENDICULAR TO ACTIVE RWY (R-12). FINAL APCH MADE WITH 20 DEG FLAPS AT 70-75 KTS. HUMAN PERFORMANCE: PLT BECAME INTENT ON LNDG THE ACFT. WHEN ACFT BALLOONED, SHOULD HAVE DECIDED TO GAR. EVEN AT TOUCHDOWN THERE WAS STILL SUFFICIENT RWY TO TAKE OFF AGAIN AND MADE NEW APCH.
