Narrative:
I rented an airplane from FBO for the sole purpose of flying to houston hobby from david wayne hooks, and back to hooks. The plane is an small aircraft. I got ATIS, they were using 35L and 35R, then ground told me, taxi to 35L and hold short of 35R. See attached diagram. I taxied passed 35R and held at the taxiway. Ground control said 'aircraft identify continue.' at this time I realized what I had done. I taxied immediately. My only excuse is that 35R and 17L look just like the taxiway, they are the same pavement, color and width. I thought I was holding at the runway when actually I was holding on the taxiway. (Next) at takeoff I was cleared for a right turn, this puts me east on a right crosswind leg then I turn right downwind which is south, climbing the whole time. I asked the tower if I may receive flight following to hobby, he advised the frequency is 123.8, and he suggested that I may wish to chose an altitude less than 1800 ft. At this point I looked at the altimeter and it read 1900 ft, so I retarded the throttle and descended to 1700 ft. I am not sure if tower said that because I had entered the TCA or because I was headed that direction and I'm not sure how far south of hooks I was or if I was or was not in the TCA. When I returned the airplane the manager of FBO called me in his office and told me that he got a call from tower, they were upset and he wanted to know what happened. I'm not sure if I did the right thing but I thought I should write you. If you need any more information feel free to call. Thank you for your time.
