Narrative:
After departing love field (dal) on an IFR flight plan to F71 fort worth luck field I crossed dfw at 4000 ft working ATC/dallas regional control. From that point I received vectors to F71 luck field. Starting my descent, ATC pointed out luck field 7 mi ahead at my 12 O'clock position with no traffic observed. At that point I cancelled IFR and changed to unicom to announce my arrival and get an airport advisory. At that point I spotted fws airfield less than 5 mi away with a much better runway and closer to my business appointment. After checking my current flight guide (3/91) and current WAC chart (the 20TH edition 7/25/91). I changed my radio to 122.7, asked for advisory (and got none) and announced my position all the way to landing. Spinks had 3 planes on the entire ramp and 2 planes in there one hangar! To my surprise, I got a call when I walked into the FBO to find out that they had an operational control tower (8:00-17:00). The control informed me that the tower had been operational for 3 months and they were trying to get everyone notified of their existence. This was also my first trip to fort worth area. Upon departure, I filed an IFR flight plan to houston and received clearance from him, and departed without incident.
