Narrative:
During cruise at FL270, we experienced a total loss of 'a' system hydraulics. Immediately called for appropriate checklists, first officer's leg -- gave him responsibility for flying and ATC communications. Informed flight attendant (#1) of problem. Instructed flight attendants to prepare cabin for a possible emergency landing (precautionary measure). Notified dispatch. Since we were still with center, I instructed dispatch to contact approach and tower to coordination our needs. This was helpful -- minimized our explanations when contacting these agencies. After preparations were complete, we lowered landing gear and flaps through alternate means. Approach and landing was uneventful. Had the gear pinned on the runway, and we were then towed to the gate (no nose wheel steering). This went well for several reasons. First, a good crew. Both cockpit and cabin crews performed well. Second, good procedures. The checklist is well written and 'covers the bases.' finally, ATC was cooperative and helpful.
