Narrative:

I was advised by ramp supervisor that outboard leading edge of left slat hit a baggage cart. Maintenance observed a small dent in leading edge at point of contact. During taxi up to gate, first officer did not raise flaps/slats as he was occupied clearing. Approach to gate was at normal, slow speed. The aircraft was brought to a stop with normal braking, following standard green/yellow/red light sequence, comments: I taxied to the gate at an extremely slow speed, as I am a new captain. I stopped precisely when the red light came on, with out slamming on the brakes. The nose tire came to rest no more than 12 inches past the designated medium large transport stop line on the ramp. The leading edge of slat at point of contact was directly over yellow line painted on the ramp. No comment about the collision was made upon arrival. I was notified to call ramp tower approximately 30 min after block in.
