Narrative:
After crossing 'trest intersection' my student thought he had also crossed the 'LOM' which we up to that point had not. He therefore started a descent down to 1220 ft using greer's altimeter setting. We had already been switched to unicom so ATC was unable to notify us immediately. By the time I caught his descending through 2000 ft we already were at 1400 ft, so I immediately advised my student that we needed to go missed approach. Another pilot then relayed a message from approach control that their altitude alert had gone off and that we should check our altitude. Part of the problem was that I hadn't shot the approach myself in awhile, and I was distraction by the WX conditions and therefore didn't catch his descent through MDA soon enough. Since then I have tried to pay closer attention to them, especially on the approachs I'm not as familiar with.

Title: ALTDEV ALT EXCURSION FROM ASSIGNED DURING IAP LOC APCH IN A NIGHT OP.
Narrative: AFTER XING 'TREST INTXN' MY STUDENT THOUGHT HE HAD ALSO CROSSED THE 'LOM' WHICH WE UP TO THAT POINT HAD NOT. HE THEREFORE STARTED A DSCNT DOWN TO 1220 FT USING GREER'S ALTIMETER SETTING. WE HAD ALREADY BEEN SWITCHED TO UNICOM SO ATC WAS UNABLE TO NOTIFY US IMMEDIATELY. BY THE TIME I CAUGHT HIS DSNDING THROUGH 2000 FT WE ALREADY WERE AT 1400 FT, SO I IMMEDIATELY ADVISED MY STUDENT THAT WE NEEDED TO GO MISSED APCH. ANOTHER PLT THEN RELAYED A MESSAGE FROM APCH CTL THAT THEIR ALT ALERT HAD GONE OFF AND THAT WE SHOULD CHK OUR ALT. PART OF THE PROBLEM WAS THAT I HADN'T SHOT THE APCH MYSELF IN AWHILE, AND I WAS DISTR BY THE WX CONDITIONS AND THEREFORE DIDN'T CATCH HIS DSCNT THROUGH MDA SOON ENOUGH. SINCE THEN I HAVE TRIED TO PAY CLOSER ATTN TO THEM, ESPECIALLY ON THE APCHS I'M NOT AS FAMILIAR WITH.
