Narrative:
Ready to push out of the gate with the doors closed, jetway pulled back, tug attached. APU was supplying power. Tug driver reported heavy smoke coming from the rear of the aircraft. I shut down the APU. Told the first officer to call the fire department, and left the seat. There was no smoke or fire in the cabin - no APU or fire warning. I opened the main aircraft door to deploy the forward airstair. The jetway was too far back for deplaning but too close to use the airstair or slide. I ordered evacuation using the galley slide. While the jetway was moved back to the aircraft a mechanic called up from the ground that there was no fire and no more smoke. Evacuation down the galley slide was stopped and redirected out the main door via the jetway - no one was hurt. There was no fire just heavy smoke outside the aircraft. No smoke in the cabin, but an odor prevailed. When a jetway is pulled back from an aircraft it should be moved far enough away so the airstair or slide can be deployed.

Title: ACR READY FOR PUSH BACK. TUG DRIVER TELLS FLC HVY SMOKE REAR OF ACFT. EVACUATION.
Narrative: READY TO PUSH OUT OF THE GATE WITH THE DOORS CLOSED, JETWAY PULLED BACK, TUG ATTACHED. APU WAS SUPPLYING PWR. TUG DRIVER RPTED HVY SMOKE COMING FROM THE REAR OF THE ACFT. I SHUT DOWN THE APU. TOLD THE FO TO CALL THE FIRE DEPT, AND L THE SEAT. THERE WAS NO SMOKE OR FIRE IN THE CABIN - NO APU OR FIRE WARNING. I OPENED THE MAIN ACFT DOOR TO DEPLOY THE FORWARD AIRSTAIR. THE JETWAY WAS TOO FAR BACK FOR DEPLANING BUT TOO CLOSE TO USE THE AIRSTAIR OR SLIDE. I ORDERED EVACUATION USING THE GALLEY SLIDE. WHILE THE JETWAY WAS MOVED BACK TO THE ACFT A MECH CALLED UP FROM THE GND THAT THERE WAS NO FIRE AND NO MORE SMOKE. EVACUATION DOWN THE GALLEY SLIDE WAS STOPPED AND REDIRECTED OUT THE MAIN DOOR VIA THE JETWAY - NO ONE WAS HURT. THERE WAS NO FIRE JUST HVY SMOKE OUTSIDE THE ACFT. NO SMOKE IN THE CABIN, BUT AN ODOR PREVAILED. WHEN A JETWAY IS PULLED BACK FROM AN ACFT IT SHOULD BE MOVED FAR ENOUGH AWAY SO THE AIRSTAIR OR SLIDE CAN BE DEPLOYED.
