Narrative:
Descending into smf numerous targets on TCASII. TCASII at 10 mi range. Approach cleared us to 3000 ft. Descending through 5000 ft, approach called VFR target 3 mi. TCASII showed him less that 500 ft vertical and inside inner ring. Rather than getting TA's or RA advisories, decide to level off and avoid a TCASII encounter. Action was appropriate. TCASII was a valuable tool, but leaves doubt as what to believe (approach or TCASII). Neither the first officer or myself saw the other target.
