Narrative:
On practice approach to rut, encountered rapid buildup (approximately 1 inch in 5 mins) rime ice, became lost on approach due to this distraction. Then unable to maintain altitude. Requested and received vectors for assistance, returned to airport safely. 2 aircraft landed using approach prior to us. Reported no ice.
