Narrative:
Mar/sun/92, XY47 am, I departed szp (santa paula) in small aircraft. I had replaced the transponder antenna and had the encoder, transponder and altimeter certified. The purpose of the flight was to air test the equipment. Departing szp runway 4 I climbed eastbound to 2500 MSL then turned south to cross south mountain into simi valley over moorpark, ca, then turned to 310 degrees about 1 mi south of the ridge line of south mountain. I called pt mugu approach and gave my position as 10 NM north of cma. Radio traffic required 2 or 3 calls to establish contact on 124.7 MHZ. Approach then gave me a code of XXXX. About 15 seconds later approach called my position as 4.5 NM north of cma at 2500 MSL. This would put me in the cma air traffic area. I acknowledged and turned north away from the air traffic area and control zone. I really felt I was about 6 mi or more from cma. At no time did I head toward cma, I intended to skirt north of the air traffic area and cma control zone. The los angeles sectional chart jan/xx/92 to jul/xx/92 does not show the cma control zone on its north side where szp and south mountain are depicted. The south side of the chart shows cma and its related control zone to be about 2 mi south of the base of south mountain. Having used szp as a base for 25 yrs and having instructed in the area I feel I was clear of cma. The cma control zone should be depicted on the chart north side.

Title: UNAUTHORIZED PENETRATION OF AIRSPACE. PROX OF ATA.
Narrative: MAR/SUN/92, XY47 AM, I DEPARTED SZP (SANTA PAULA) IN SMA. I HAD REPLACED THE TRANSPONDER ANTENNA AND HAD THE ENCODER, TRANSPONDER AND ALTIMETER CERTIFIED. THE PURPOSE OF THE FLT WAS TO AIR TEST THE EQUIP. DEPARTING SZP RWY 4 I CLBED EBOUND TO 2500 MSL THEN TURNED S TO CROSS S MOUNTAIN INTO SIMI VALLEY OVER MOORPARK, CA, THEN TURNED TO 310 DEGS ABOUT 1 MI S OF THE RIDGE LINE OF S MOUNTAIN. I CALLED PT MUGU APCH AND GAVE MY POS AS 10 NM N OF CMA. RADIO TFC REQUIRED 2 OR 3 CALLS TO ESTABLISH CONTACT ON 124.7 MHZ. APCH THEN GAVE ME A CODE OF XXXX. ABOUT 15 SECONDS LATER APCH CALLED MY POS AS 4.5 NM N OF CMA AT 2500 MSL. THIS WOULD PUT ME IN THE CMA ATA. I ACKNOWLEDGED AND TURNED N AWAY FROM THE ATA AND CTL ZONE. I REALLY FELT I WAS ABOUT 6 MI OR MORE FROM CMA. AT NO TIME DID I HEAD TOWARD CMA, I INTENDED TO SKIRT N OF THE ATA AND CMA CTL ZONE. THE LOS ANGELES SECTIONAL CHART JAN/XX/92 TO JUL/XX/92 DOES NOT SHOW THE CMA CTL ZONE ON ITS N SIDE WHERE SZP AND S MOUNTAIN ARE DEPICTED. THE S SIDE OF THE CHART SHOWS CMA AND ITS RELATED CTL ZONE TO BE ABOUT 2 MI S OF THE BASE OF S MOUNTAIN. HAVING USED SZP AS A BASE FOR 25 YRS AND HAVING INSTRUCTED IN THE AREA I FEEL I WAS CLR OF CMA. THE CMA CTL ZONE SHOULD BE DEPICTED ON THE CHART N SIDE.
